Cercis canadensis Merlot

Developed from a cross between ‘Forest Pansy’ and a Texas redbud, ‘Merlot’ was bred for compact size and resilience. In early spring, the bare branches are smothered with rosy-purple pea-like flowers, followed by glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Emerging a rich burgundy, the foliage remains a lustrous purple well into summer before softening to darker green tones. The upright, vase-shaped form matures to about 3 m tall and wide in many gardens, making it ideal for smaller spaces. With greater tolerance of heat and drought than many redbuds, ‘Merlot’ excels in sunny, well-drained positions as a specimen tree, feature near a patio, or planted in groups for seasonal colour.
