As a deciduous conifer, Larix gmelinii (Dahurian larch) offers year-round interest by changing its appearance with the seasons. ‘Dortmund’ is a cultivated form that is valued for its reliable hardiness and good structure. In spring and summer it bears soft green needles; come autumn it turns a bright golden hue before the foliage drops, leaving a delicate, airy skeleton of branches in winter.
Its form is generally upright or pyramidal, offering an elegant silhouette when leafless. The bare structure allows light and other plants beneath to show through. In colder climates it is especially robust, tolerating extreme winters (being a naturally northern species). ‘Dortmund’ is ideal for gardeners who want motion through the seasons — the fresh spring foliage, autumn splendour, and sculptural winter presence all in one tree. Because it drops needles, it’s wise to place it where fallen needles are acceptable (e.g. not directly over patios).
