Acer palmatum Bi hoo is well known for its striking yellow bark. It was introduced in Europe (from Japan) by Guy Maillot. The leaves in spring are yellow-green and turn green in the summer and back to yellow in fall.
Bi hoo is a sensitive maple that is prone to dieback, so it needs some extra care. Dick Van der Maat told us it does better in the ground. He had a few really big ones in the back. Either plant it in the ground in a sheltered location (a bit higher than its surroundings so it has perfect drainage), or keep it in a pot and make sure it drains very well. In pot, it's always better of in a greenhouse during the cold winter months.
Sometimes they die without a reason, but we've seen stunning Bi hoo's, for example in Arboretum Trompenburg (cf. the picture below).
